On June 19, 2024, we launched STEM Sisters in New South Wales, welcoming sisters from a different state and a new chapter for us. The event allowed us at last to introduce our most treasured sisterhood for our sisters in another state. Through this event, we hope our sisters in Sydney feel empowered, knowing that there’s always a helping hand that is reaching out when you need us!
The event started at 5:15 at Sydney Startup Hub, showcasing what we stand for. Dr. Ruwangi Fernando, our passionate founding sister, introduced STEM Sisters, and why it is so important to be bound together by a sisterhood, emphasised what needs to be focused on to advance in equity, like the importance of intersectional equity, introducing the initiatives that were implemented by STEM Sisters to bring more awareness to the issues and to help women who are facing said issues.
Dr. Ruwangi Fernando introduced the wide range of initiatives that STEM Sisters offers and why they are important to have in place!
- Our Mentoring and Ambassador programs allow women of colour in STEM to be empowered by leading and being led by other women of colour in STEM.
- Our Awareness of Opportunity initiative allows the sisters with connections to help those who suffer from the lack of opportunities in the careers.
- Our Award-Winning Magazine, MAGNIFY, allows us to shine light on those who have walked the walk and celebrate and empower them.
- Our BE YOU initiative helps you find YOUR style and YOUR confidence.
- Our Future Me initiative allows our younger sisters to see role models and to see bits and pieces of their futures in a STEM Careers.
Participants connected with like-minded individuals, professionals, mentors, and mentees in the STEM community. We would like to celebrate the new sisterhoods that have been formed during this event and hope to see many more in our future events, too! We are more than excited to be bringing our strong sisterhood community to a new state and really looking forward to all the things we can achieve in our new chapter!
Thank you to all our sisters who came to the empowering night in Sydney, it truly was one of our dreams coming true, being able to expand our initiatives, that started in Victoria, but now interstate into New South Wales!
