Increase Awareness of Opportunities
Harnessing the Power of Networking to Uncover Hidden Opportunities …
STEM Sisters’ LinkedIn group is breaking barriers for women of colour (WOC) in STEM by increasing awareness of opportunities and resources. With over 1,700 members, this group consists of WOC in STEM and their allies, working together to create a supportive professional network.
The importance of a solid professional network cannot be overstated, as one study found that about 32% of jobs go unadvertised, contributing to the hidden job market. By utilizing the networking potential of LinkedIn, the STEM Sisters group aims to ensure that members are well-informed when such opportunities arise.
Through the STEM Sisters LinkedIn group, WOC can:
Access information, resources, and STEM opportunities, such as job vacancies, awards, graduate programs, internships, events, grants, and scholarships. Members can stay updated on options in their respective fields by sharing these opportunities within the group.
Reach out to the group for advice and support. Members can engage with others by sharing a question, posting a poll, or sending personal messages. This creates a safe space for WOC to seek guidance and encouragement as they navigate their STEM careers.
Share opportunities with the group. Members are encouraged to post any opportunities, ensuring that others can benefit from their findings.
Experience a sense of belonging and a supportive community. The STEM Sisters group provides an online sisterhood, fostering camaraderie among WOC in STEM and helping them feel more connected professionally.
