Halloween Science: So Spook-tacular, You Won’t Boo-lieve It!

What happens when you mix Halloween fun with the wonders of science? A workshop so thrilling, it’s downright magical! This past weekend at Library at The Dock, Dr. Ruwangi Fernando and the STEM Sisters Ambassadors brought spooky science to life with an engaging and hands-on Halloween Science Workshop.

Over the course of the workshop, kids and adults alike dived into the following eerie experiments:

• Spider Bag Experiment 🕷️ – A creepy-crawly demonstration that fascinated and thrilled curious minds
• Sodium Bicarb-Vinegar Jack-o’-Lanterns 🎃 – Watch out! These carved pumpkins came to life with bubbling, fizzing reactions that wowed everyone.
• Flying Ghosts 👻 – A hauntingly fun exploration of static electricity that sent “ghosts” soaring through the air.
• Balancing the Broomstick 🧹 – Gravity, balance, and a little Halloween magic combined to create a seemingly impossible trick.

The energy was infectious, with kids and adults enthusiastically asking questions and diving deep into the “why” behind every experiment. One of the highlights was the sodium bicarb-vinegar Jack-o’-lanterns. Watching pumpkins foam and fizz had everyone smiling—proof that science and fun go hand in hand!
